Chapter 13
She stared out the window without seeing anything. She had royally fucked up her life and was now paying a small price. She’d had a wonderful man who had been devoted to her and a family that were friends. She had ruined it all because she was obsessed with the one man who never paid her any mind.
“Emily?” She turned back to her doctor and looked at him questioningly. “I asked you how you felt after a month of being here?”
“Stupid,” she replied in a dead voice.
“And why’s that?” Emily sighed and shrugged her shoulders. “Emily, therapy only works when you talk about how you feel about things.”
“What am I supposed to say?” Emily shouted. “I had it all until that bitch came and took it away!”
Her therapist sighed, a month in and they still had a long way to go.

Paul joining Bella on her morning run became routine. Sam was glad that Paul was trying to be himself with her and Bella was glad she had her friend back. She had felt as if he was avoiding her, especially once Emily was gone. That got her thinking even more, thoughts she had hoped to avoid. Unfortunately, thoughts that were following the line they were couldn’t be ignored. She knew she would have to talk about them soon.
She was sitting at her desk making notes on a chart when Sue walked in and told her she had a patient waiting on her. “Okay, I’ll be there in just a minute.” She closed up the chart and stored it with the others before walking down the corridor to her waiting patient.
“Hi, I’m Bella,” she started as she walked in, but stopped when she looked up. “Kim?”
“Hey, Bells.”
Bella smiled at her friend and then noticed Jared was with her. “So what’s up?”
Kim looked at Jared and then at Bella, “Well, I’ve been feeling sick the last couple weeks. I can’t keep anything down, except some water.”
Jared took over from there, “She’s lost at least five pounds and you know she’s skinny enough.”
Bella nodded and walked toward the wall picking up a blood pressure cuff. “Alright, let’s see what’s going on?” She wrapped the cuff around Kim’s arm and pulled up her stethoscope. “Do you think you could be pregnant?” She asked as she took Kim’s blood pressure.
“I’ve had three negative tests, but I also haven’t had a period.”
“Okay, let me see what’s going on.” Bella did some routine checks and wrote down the results, before handing Kim a cup and asking for a urine sample. While she was gone, Bella looked at Jared. “Have you not heard anything?”
“No, that’s what I don’t understand. If she is, I should be hearing it by now.”
“Okay, well let me see what’s going on first before you guys panic. She could just be too early and all this Emily crap was stressful for all of us, so that’s something else.” Kim came back and set the cup on the counter before getting back on the bed.
“Okay, Kim, your blood pressure is a little high, but that could be nerves. I’m gonna take this and run a urinalysis and a pregnancy test. I’m also gonna have Sue come in and take some blood. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
“Thanks, Bells.”
Walking out of the room, Bella passed Sue on her way to the inhouse lab and made her request for the blood to be drawn. She ran the tests she needed to and wrote down her findings. She had just gotten the last result when Sue walked in with the blood.
“What are we looking for?” Sue asked as she handed the blood to the one tech the res kept on staff.
“I want a quantitative blood test run. I need to see if there is any HCG present and what her levels are.”
“Okay, I’ll get it back as soon as possible. Did you get anything from the urine?”
“Low levels, so hopefully the blood will tell me more. I did find what’s making her so sick, so I’m going to give her some meds that are safe just in case.”
“Alright, I’ll bring you the results when they come in.”
Nodding, Bella went back to where Kim and Jared were waiting. “Alright,” she pulled out the stool and sat down in front of her friends. “Well, Kim, I’m writing you a prescription for Cephalexin. It’s an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections and is safe to take when pregnant. Now, your urine showed low levels of the HCG hormone that indicates pregnancy, but I don’t want to tell you that you are until I get the blood results back. I am however putting you on a sex embargo. Sorry, Jelly-bean, but your hand will be your friend until she’s done with the medication.”
Jared growled at her while Kim giggled. “Stop it, Jar.”
“Fine, I suppose I can wait,” Jared sighed.
“So, go get your meds filled, go home and I’ll call you when I have the results of your bloodwork.”
The three of them stood up and Kim hugged her friend. “Thanks, Bella.”
She smiled and shooed them out the door as she went about the rest of her day. When she’d seen her last patient and was finishing up her charts Sue walked in.
“I have Kim’s results for you, Bella.”
Bella smiled and took the file from her, “Thanks. We need to have a family dinner soon. I feel like I never see dad anymore.”
“I know, honey. We’ll plan something soon.” Sue turned to leave, “I’m really glad you’re here, Bella.”
“Me too, Sue,” Bella smiled at her stepmother and turned to finish her work. Once she was done, she turned out her light and walked out to her car.
She wasn’t surprised when she pulled up to her house to see the entire pack assembled, minus Quil who was on patrol. They were awaiting news that Bella was going to deliver and would celebrate accordingly. Once she parked, she was immediately accosted by Jared, who pulled her out and to where Kim was waiting.
“Did you get your pills?” Bella asked her with a wink.
“Yes,” Kim grinned. “Did you have to prescribe me horse pills? Those things are huge!”
Bella took that as her opening, “Well that’s too bad. Wait until you see the size of the prenatal vitamins you’ll have to start taking. They’re just as big.”
“Why do I need...?” Kim trailed off and stared at her friend. “Really?”
Bella nodded and laughed when Kim threw her arms around her neck.
“Oh, thank you, Bella!” Kim cried.
Bella pulled back and placed her hands on Kim’s cheeks, “Just make sure you do what I tell you when it comes to these meds.”
“I will, Bells, I promise.” She hugged her again before pulling away and looking at Jared, nodding her head. Howls and cheers of congratulations rang out in the yard and the celebration for the first pack pup began.

Bella and Sam lay in bed curled around each other. Sam was thrilled for Jared and Kim, the first pack pup was definitely exciting. Bella was trying to think of how to ask Sam the question which had been bothering her for a while.
“What’s on your mind, honey?” Sam asked as he tightened his arm around her waist.
Bella took a deep breath and lifted her head, laying her chin on Sam’s chest. “It’s Paul, isn’t it?”
Sam wasn’t prepared for her question, so he visibly jolted. Staring into her eyes, he knew he couldn’t lie to her. “How did you figure it out?”
Bella sat up and turned to look at him over her shoulder, “I think I’ve always known.”
Sam sat up as well and pulled her onto his lap. “Yes, it’s Paul. He’s extremely worried about what will happen when you find out. He’s also afraid of me if for some reason you reciprocate.”
“Oh, Sam, I would never do anything without first talking to you about it. That would be something for the three of us to discuss, together.”
“I know, baby.” Sam kissed her lips gently and pulled away. “Can I ask you something though?”
“Sure,” Bella smiled.
“Do you...” he swallowed before finishing his thought. “Do you have feelings for Paul?”
Bella stared at him for a minute. She knew he wasn’t as comfortable about the whole situation as he claimed. “Sam, I’ve always loved Paul. I’ve always had a close relationship with you, him and Jared. You were the three who found me at my worst and protected me. Jared is my fun big brother who likes to tease me and give me a hard time. But you and Paul, you are the two I could never see as brothers. Trust me, I tried.”
“So what you’re saying is,” Sam flipped her onto her back, hovering above her. “You love the both of us?”
“Yes, honey. You are my priority, though. The spirits told us that we are the perfect match by giving us the imprint. If anything ever happens with Paul, it will be with all of our consents.”
“That’s all I needed to hear.” Sam smashed his mouth to hers and set about proving why they were the perfect match.
She stared out the window without seeing anything. She had royally fucked up her life and was now paying a small price. She’d had a wonderful man who had been devoted to her and a family that were friends. She had ruined it all because she was obsessed with the one man who never paid her any mind.
