Chapter 20
Despite the fact their Alpha was still in a coma, life resumed for the pack. Paul and Jared went back to work, as did the others, while Bella kept a vigil at Sam’s bedside. She had promised to let them all know of any changes. Paul had been reluctant to leave her, but they needed the income and they were already a little behind schedule on the house they had been commissioned to build.
Charlie had finally finished all the paperwork from the incident as well as talks with the police in Neah Bay after they had discovered Terry Young’s body. His murder was closed when Charlie explained Emily’s confession before her subsequent death. All cases regarding her in LaPush had been closed as well. Now they could move on and begin to heal.
The pack had four babies coming and it was going to be an exciting time. Kim and Bella were due days apart, Leah was about three weeks behind them with Angela being due a month after.
Bella wasn’t concentrating on her baby right then as she watched Doc Redfeather walk into Sam’s room. Nathan nodded at her, “It’s time, Bella. We’re going to give him the medication to counteract the sedation. Hopefully it won’t be too long. Let me know if there are any changes.”
Bella sat beside him, holding his hand in hers, while stroking the back of his knuckles with her free hand. She desperately wanted him to open his eyes, to see him smile at her and tell her he loved her.
It was an hour after the medication was stopped that she felt his finger twitch, causing her to gasp. With tears forming, “That’s it, baby. Wake up for me, Sam.”
Over the next thirty minutes, his fingers twitched several times before he finally closed them over hers. When she heard him let out a groan, she looked up at him just as his head turned and he began squeezing his eyes shut in effort to open them. Bella stood and pushed the hair on his forehead back and stroked his cheek. “Sam?”
Sam turned his head toward her and slowly blinked awake, trying to hold his eyes open to look at his wife. “Be...” his voice was gravely with disuse and his throat was dry.
“Hold on, honey.” Bella reached for the cup of ice beside her, pulled out a cube and rubbed it along his lips. “Open up, baby.”
Sam opened his mouth and took the ice, licking the moisture from his lips. “Bella? What...?”
“Look at me, Sam.” Bella waited until his eyes were on her once more. “What do you remember?”
Sam closed his eyes again and squeezed Bella’s hand tighter in his own. He thought about what he could and remembered Emily showing up at their house, Paul and Jacob were shot, but it got foggy after that.
“Emily! Paul and Jacob...?”
“They’re okay, honey.” Bella took a deep breath before she began. “She shot you, Sam, three times in the chest. I had to put a tube in your chest to help you breathe, but your heart stopped beating.” She choked back a sob, “I didn’t know if you were gonna make it.”
Sam immediately lifted his hand and pressed it to her cheek. “Hey, hey, baby. Bella, look at me.” When her eyes met his he smiled, “I’m here and I’m alive. You saved me, honey.” Sam leaned his head up and kissed her lips, causing Bella to sigh. When he pulled away, “What happened to Emily?”
“She’s dead. Dad shot her.” She looked down, “He’s beating himself up because he felt like he should have fired sooner and then you wouldn’t be here. I told him it wasn’t his fault, but I think seeing you awake will help.”
“How long have I been out?”
“Three days,” Bella told him, then looked at him closely. “Be honest with me, Sam. How are you feeling?”
Sam lay still for a few minutes and paid attention to how he felt. “I don’t feel any pain. I feel a little weak, but that must be the blood loss. I would like to sit up, is that allowed?”
Bella nodded and helped him rise up, adjusting his bed for his new position. “How’s that?”
“It would be better if you were on this bed with me,” Sam grinned.
“Not yet, Mr. Uley.” Doc Redfeather came around the corner. “I’ll need to check you out before you can cuddle with your wife.”
“I’m gonna go call everyone.” Bella pressed a kiss to Sam’s lips and headed out of the room while the Doc checked him over.
She called her other husband first, smiling when he answered on the first ring, almost like he was expecting her.
“Hey, baby.”
“Hey. He’s awake.”
“We’ll be there soon. I love you.”
“Love you,” she smiled as she hung up the phone, pressing her hand to where she could feel her baby fluttering.
“Bella?” She turned and smiled as Nathan walked in her direction. “He looks great. So great in fact, I think he can go home under your supervision. However, I don’t want him phasing for another three days.”
“That sounds amazing. What about sex?” Normally a question like that would have caused her to blush, but she was a married woman with two husbands and a baby on the way. She was past the blushing.
Nathan chuckled and shook his head. “Sam asked the same thing. Only if he feels well enough and only if you are the one in charge.”
Bella grinned, “Good. Thanks for everything, Nathan. I promise as soon as he can phase safely, I’ll be back to work.”
“Just take care of your husband, Bella. Your patients will wait.” He gently touched her shoulder and walked away.
Paul and Jared walked in just as the doc was walking away. “Bella?”
She turned and smiled at her husband. “Sam gets to come home.”
“That’s amazing.” Paul wrapped his arms around her. “Let’s go get him.”

Sam was thrilled when he walked in his home, he hated lying in the hospital, even if he hadn’t been conscious. All he wanted was to spend an evening in his home with his family and then snuggle with his mate, listening to the sound of their baby’s heartbeat.
Bella got him settled in their living room and fluttered around trying to make sure he had everything he needed. Sam shook his head, while Paul sat in a recliner laughing.
“Bella, I’m fine, honey,” he patted the cushion beside him. “I’ll feel better if you sit with me for a bit.”
“Paul, stop laughing at me.” Bella pouted as she sank down beside Sam. “Had this been you I would have been acting the same way.”
“I’m sorry, babe. I just think it’s cute.” Paul stopped laughing.
“So what’s going on? I expected to see people here,” Sam commented as he wrapped an arm around Bella, who immediately curled into him.
“Angela and Kim will be here in a little while, with food. They didn’t want Bella to cook. Charlie and Sue will be here when he gets off shift. Obviously Jacob and Jared will be here with their imprints.”
“How is Jake?” Bella asked, having almost completely forgotten he was injured as well.
“He’s doing fine. He told me that once they removed the bullet, it was quick healing for him. He went home two days ago, but Ang has been keeping him laid up until today.”
Bella smiled and put her head on Sam’s shoulder. “That means we beat it. No one fell except the twisted one.”
Once the others arrived and everyone was gathered around the table, Charlie stood up. “I just want to apologize for the delay in my actions against Emily. If I hadn’t hesitated, Sam and Jacob wouldn’t have been shot.”
“Daddy...” Bella started.
“No,” Sam stopped her. “Let me.” Looking at Jacob, who nodded as if he were reading his mind. “Charlie, I may not remember a lot about what happened when I was shot, but I know I heard you fire at the same time she did. You couldn’t change the trajectory of her bullets anymore than you could the speed in which yours hit her. There is nothing to forgive, Charlie.”
Charlie ducked his head, trying to hide his emotions at knowing he wasn’t blamed. Once that was out of the way, they all settled down and had a loud and fun dinner, celebrating that they were still alive.
