Chapter 8
Elijah raised a brow, throwing a glance over his shoulder before stepping aside. "Come in Kol."
With a wicked grin, Kol stepped in looking quite smug for some reason. "Cozy," he commented as he crossed the room to flop into a chair while eyeing Klaus. Both brows rose at the sight of the baby resting on his brother's shoulder. "You're looking quite…domestic," he quipped. "Whose child is it? A new conquest, perhaps?" He glanced around. "Where is she? I'd love to meet the new flavor of the week! She must be something special for the fierce Niklaus Mikaelson to stoop to cuddling infants."
Elijah raised a sardonic brow as Klaus glanced at him. Seeing no ready help there, Klaus pinned his younger brother with a flat look. "The child is mine."
Kol's grin widened impossibly. "Really?" he asked before morphing his expression into mock concern while leaning forward. "Tell me, are you breast feeding, and does it make your nipples terribly sore? I've always wondered because it seems like it would…"
Elijah bit back a snort as Klaus rolled his eyes. "You're utterly ridiculous."
Kol sat back, smirking as he examined his nails. "Yes, I've heard that a time or two."
"What are you doing here, Kol, and how did you find us?"
"I missed my loving brothers! And as for how I found you? You can't expect me to give away all my secrets."
The bedroom door opened just then and Bella walked out, her attention fully on the bracelet she was clasping to her wrist. "Was Dominic any trouble? Because I forgot to tell you there are bottles for him in the fridge. You just have to… Oh…hello," she greeted Kol, freezing in her tracks with widened eyes when she finally noticed his presence.
Kol stood and glided to her, taking her hand to brush a kiss over her fingers. "I'm Kol Mikaelson, the younger, most devastatingly handsome brother. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss…?"
She blinked, a wry smile curling her lips. "Bella…Bella Swan, and it's very nice to meet you too." She glanced at Klaus then back to Kol who, to Klaus's rising ire, still held Bella's hand.
Bella subtly removed her hand from Kol's light grasp who—to her amusement—smirked and winked before resuming his seat. "She's quite lovely, brother. I approve."
Klaus raised a brow. "Yes, because we all know I live for your approval."
Kol smirked. "Then I'm relieved I was able to ease your burden." He eyed Bella and the baby. "So, truly Nik? I have a nephew?"
"Yes, Kol, you have a nephew."
"How…?"
Bella smirked and glanced between Klaus and Elijah before scolding, "I can't believe you two neglected your little brother's education." With mirth shining in her eyes, she leaned forward meeting Kol's gaze. "You see, when a man and a woman are attracted to each other…" she trailed off with a grin which Kol matched as he too leaned forward, looking all too eager.
"Yes? Do go on, lovely Bella, as I'm starved for information!"
Elijah chuckled dryly while Klaus raised a brow, crossed his arms over his chest and smirked at her. She rolled her eyes and chuckled. "I can see you're going to be a little shit, Kol."
"I do try," he agreed with a smirk while relaxing back in his chair.
Elijah glanced at his watch. "I believe breakfast is now out of the question—at least in any sort of decent establishment—and we're quickly approaching early dinner. Shall we be going?"
Bella handed the baby to Klaus and stood. "Give me a minute to pack a bag for Dominic." She disappeared into the bedroom, only to hurry into the kitchen moments later with bag in hand in which she began packing bottles from the fridge. Elijah calmly pulled out his phone to call for a car and book a table at a restaurant while Klaus strapped his son into his carrier and retrieved a blanket from the bedroom to tuck around him.
Meanwhile, Kol observed all of this with an air of amused disbelief. "My God, I've never seen such a production just to go have lunch. It's like mobilizing the bloody troops."
They all converged at the door and Kol rose to follow, arching a brow as Bella shoved a multi-pastel colored bag in his hands to lock the apartment as Elijah and Klaus made their way to the black limousine smoothly idling at the curb.
Klaus made short work of securing the baby seat in the car before turning to help Bella in. "After you, love," he said while placing a kiss to her fingers. She smiled warmly and kissed his cheek before climbing in.
When they were on their way, Bella glanced around. "So, a limo just to go to lunch?"
Klaus raised her hand to his lips for a kiss as Kol grinned. "I doubt my brother is taking you to Burger King, Bella."
She glanced down at the clothes she was wearing—snug designer jeans, a tasteful blouse and heeled boots—and while they weren't cheap by any means, they were hardly what anyone would consider posh. "I didn't think so, Kol, but I'm not exactly dressed for fine dining either."
Klaus leaned over and placed a slow kiss to her neck, murmuring, "You're fine, love."
She barely suppressed a delicious shiver at the feel of those warm, soft lips combined with his smooth tone of voice while Kol crossed his arms and grinned knowingly from the seat across from her. She narrowed her eyes and nudged his shin with the toe of her boot while muttering, "You're a menace."
"Thank you, darling," he drawled, his wicked grin never wavering.
Her lips twitched as she fought her amusement. "You were never spanked as a child, were you?"
Klaus snorted while Elijah muttered, "No, but he should have been."
Kol simply looked smug. "Don't listen to a word these wankers say, Bella. I was a lovely child and the favorite for reasons that will become obvious. These two gits are jealous, therefore their opinions are biased and do not matter."
She chuckled. "Nik, remind me to keep Kol away from our son when he's older." Her comment was made entirely in jest but she regretted it immediately as pain flashed through Kol's eyes. Then, to her shame, his eyes turned hard as his smile took on a bitter twist.
"I'm sure that won't be a problem, Bella, as I'm barely acknowledged in this family as it is," he said before turning his attention to stare out the tinted window.
The rest of the drive was mercifully short and Kol was the last to exit the vehicle. Bella turned to Klaus who was once again carrying Dominic in his carrier. "Go ahead. We'll catch up," she said as she placed a hand on Kol's arm, delaying him before he could walk away.
Klaus searched her eyes for a moment before nodding. "We'll wait just inside," he said with a warning look at Kol who rolled his eyes and waved a hand dismissively.
She nodded and watched them walk away before turning back to Kol. "I'm sorry," she murmured, meeting Kol's cool but curious gaze. "What I said was meant as a joke, but I can see you took it literally and I could kick myself for ever saying it.
"I would never try to keep you from any of your family and my son is part of your family. You're his uncle, and I would love for him to know you. I know we just met, but I already like you and I'm sure he'll grow up loving you, so please, forgive me?"
He raised a brow, the cold look in his eyes warming a bit as a smirk quirked his lips. "My, but you're a sensitive little thing, aren't you?" he mused. "Very well, love, I accept your apology, but only because I can tell you mean what you say," he said while throwing an arm over her shoulders to guide her into the restaurant. "The fact that Nik will bloody well hate if we grow close is a plus too."
"You're so bad," she muttered through a chuckle and he ushered her through the door with a cocky smirk.
After they'd been seated and everyone had ordered, Klaus brought up living arrangements again causing Bella to choke on a sip of water. She coughed into her fine linen napkin before eyeing him incredulously. "We've really only known each other for what…going on three days? And you want me to move across the country to live with you?"
Klaus smirked behind the rim of his glass. "Yes. You're mine, we have a child together, and time is relative, love. To be honest, I don't really see a problem."
Her brows shot up and she leaned back, crossing her arms and doing her best to ignore Kol's grin and Elijah's secret smirk as she narrowed her eyes at Klaus. "Really? Again with the possessive declarations… And you don't see a problem? Tell me Niklaus, what happens if you decide I irritate the shit out of you and you don't like me very much after a couple of weeks? What then?"
He leaned back in his seat, his gaze calculating as he studied her for moments. "All right then, here's what we'll do. I'll stay here with you for a month so that we may come to know each other better. Then we'll move."
Elijah stifled a snort and she blinked at a decidedly smug looking Klaus, his air supremely confidant as he took a sip of his drink while raising a brow in challenge, awaiting her response.
Taking a deep breath in and letting it out slowly, she narrowed her eyes. "You're impossible..." she muttered before shaking her head. "Fine. I'll give you a month. Then…we'll see."
Klaus grinned smugly and the food arrived.
Elijah raised a brow, throwing a glance over his shoulder before stepping aside. "Come in Kol."
