Chapter 5
“I like this.” Her smile was soft as was the look in her eyes as she gazed out over the crashing waves. “This is nice.”
They had just finished lunch and were now huddled under a blanket, sitting on the beach. It was their fifth official date.
Days earlier, she’d finally answered his call, and for that, Jasper was thankful. He wasn’t sure what it was about Isabella Swan, but he couldn’t walk away, not even when she’d made things difficult.
“It is,” he murmured, taking her hand in his. “Thank you for joining me.”
She looked into his eyes. “Thanks for not giving up on me.”
He smiled, his thumb gently rubbing circles on her hand. “You’re worth it,” he said, the irony of those words not lost on him. He felt the truth of them though, as he spoke them.
She blushed and cast her gaze down. “Why me, Jasper?” she asked, radiating worthlessness.
Reaching up, he tipped her face toward him. “Hey,” he said softly, “why not you?”
She scoffed and he frowned. “Listen to me,” he said earnestly and her gaze snapped back to his. “You’re beautiful, inside and out.” His hand cupped her cheek, his thumb tracing the apple of her cheek, his eyes searching hers as he slowly leaned in.
Her heart sped as his sweet breath washed over her parted lips and he paused, his gaze flitting from her eyes to her lips and back as her breath hitched. “May I kiss you, Bella?” he whispered.
“Please,” she breathed, her eyes falling closed as he closed the distance, his lips moving softly upon hers, his head tilting as he threaded his fingers in her hair, gently cupping her head to tilt it and deepen the kiss.
It was all she’d ever hoped a first kiss to be; sweet. soft sensuous; then she felt the velvet tip of his tongue, moaning deep in her throat as he dipped past her lips to taste and play.
“Jasper,” she whispered, as his kisses trailed over her cheek to the tender skin under her ear.
“So soft,” he breathed, “so sweet…”
Rolling her head to the side, she moaned as he gently nipped and kissed down her neck, his whispered words speeding her heart while drawing her in. “Jasper, I…”
Her phone rang and she jumped, her eyes snapping open as he drew back with a smile. “I should probably…”
He nodded and she answered. “Hello?”
“Bells, how are you?”
She sighed. “Fine Charlie.”
“Yeah? You get the check?”
Her gaze cut to Jasper who steadfastly watched the rolling waves. “Yes, I just haven’t deposited it yet.”
“And the rent?”
Frustration rolled off her. “Phil took care of it. Paid it for the year, so no worries there, either.”
“Okay, Bells, just wanna make sure you’re taken care of.”
She frowned. “I’m not a kid, Charlie.”
He sighed. “I know. I just worry.”
“Well, don’t.”
“How’s everything else? Do you…have you remembered anything?”
“No,” she practically growled. “You know I’m not supposed to push it.”
“I know,” he said with a sigh. “I just…hope, you know?”
“Yeah, well, sorry to disappoint…again.”
“Bells, it’s not like that…”
“Look, I’m kinda busy.”
“All right, Bells, call if you need anything.”
“I will.”
She hung up and glanced at Jasper. “Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. It sounded important.”
“My father,” she said, biting her lip. “I’ll tell you about it someday,” she said, leaning into his side as he wrapped an arm around her.
“Whenever you’re ready, Bella,” he said with a kiss to her temple. “I’ll listen.”
