Chapter 9
He waited in the abandoned warehouse, fully knowing the wolf would track his scent and he wasn’t wrong as the door slammed open and closed just as violently. “You stay the hell away from her!” the bristling shifter growled, his eyes flashing yellow as he fought the phase.
His smirk was cold as he pushed off the wall he’d leaned against to stand to his full height. “Bella wants me around, dog. It’s you she can’t stand.”
“She doesn’t remember you—doesn’t remember any of you!”
Jasper gave a nod. “Perhaps not, but she knows me now and more than welcomes my presence.”
The shifter’s lip curled. “She won’t when she finds out what and who you are.”
Jasper arched a brow. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it, mutt.”
“You think I’m gonna stand by and watch while you play with her?”
“Who says I’m playin’?”
“I do.”
“You’re wrong. Not that it’s any business of yours, but I care for her.”
“Right,” the shifter said with a snort, “like your leech brother cared for her?”
Jasper shrugged. “He did care for her, if you must know, but he’s not very mature and lacks a certain amount of selfishness. I don’t have that particular problem. You see, I tend to play for keeps.”
The shifter bared his teeth. “You won’t stand a chance against me and my pack, leech.”
Jasper grinned widely, rolling his shoulders to loosen up while watching a shiver make its way through the wary shifter’s body. “Where’s your pack now, boy? ‘Cause ya better call them. You’re gonna need all the help you can get.”
With that, Jasper launched himself, meeting the phased wolf mid-air as their fight began. It didn’t last long though and within four moves, the wolf lay dead at Jasper’s feet, his neck cleanly snapped.
“Good riddance, mutt,” he growled just as a flash of lightning cast its light through the dingy, high-set warehouse windows. Rain began to pour soon after, quickly washing away their scent trails. It would buy him time before having to deal with the remainder of the pack, but he knew they’d make an appearance sooner or later, just as he knew he’d soon have to deal with the Cullens.
He only hoped he’d have time to speak to Bella first.
And he prayed to every deity she wouldn’t hate him.
