Chapter 10
“Yeah I love my baby, she's long and lean
You mess with her, you'll see a man gettin' mean
She's my sweet little thing, she's my pride and joy
She's my sweet little baby, I'm her little lover boy”
Bella huffed a laugh as Jasper spun her out and back into his arms, his smooth voice quietly singing the words to Pride and Joy by Stevie Ray Vaughan into her ear, causing goosebumps to break out over her flesh.
She’d protested vehemently, but true to his word, the man could dance, more than making up for her lack of talent with his sure steps and firm but gentle hold. With him, she didn’t so much as stumble, but more than that, she was having the time of her life.
After Jake had left, she’d been a mess, only getting a hold of herself just before Jasper had arrived. She hadn’t wanted to talk about it, though, and so here they were, in this quaint little bar, dancing. He’d refused to take no for an answer, and now, she was glad of that fact.
The sparkle in her eyes matched her bright smile as she gazed up at him, her body held close to his as he guided her around the floor, his voice still smoothly singing the next stanza causing a blush to stain her cheeks.
“Well I love my baby like the finest wine
Stick with her until the end of time
She's my sweet little thing, she's my pride and joy
She's my sweet little baby, I'm her little lover boy”
When the song ended, her breath caught as he dipped her, staring into her eyes for a beat before placing a soft kiss to her parted lips. “Shall we go back to our table, my sweet little thing?” he asked, his southern-tinged tone teasing and light
“Yeah,” she breathed against his lips, her eyes fluttering open as she grinned. “I think I need a drink.”
He stood her back up and led her back to their table with a hand on the small of her back, signaling the waitress as he helped her into the booth. “Hard cider, please,” he ordered while sliding in next to Bella. The waitress, much to Bella’s displeasure, winked and sashayed away, her micro-mini skirt clad hips swaying seductively, not that Jasper noticed.
“Hey now, no frowns. You’re supposed to be havin’ a good time,” he said while pulling her attention back to him with a finger under her chin.
Bella shot him a sheepish smile. “I am, it’s just the waitress…”
“…can’t hold a candle to you, sugar.” He leaned over, his lips brushing hers as he murmured, “You’re the only one I see, Bella. There’s only you for me.”
Her eyes fluttered open and he held her gaze as her breath hitched. He wasn’t smirking, smiling or teasing as his fingers lightly traced her cheek. “You mean it?” she asked, her heart skipping a beat at the possibility.
“Yeah, darlin’, I mean it,” he said, his fingers cupping her head to pull her into a breath-stealing kiss. His lips were soft and sweet as they gently nipped and tugged at hers, capturing her low moan and soft sighs as she lost herself to him.
When he ended it with a soft peck, she whispered against his lips, “You’re it for me too, Jay. I…I think I love you.”
“Here ya go, honey, one hard cider.”
Bella jerked back from Jasper, in shock at what she’d just admitted as the waitress set the bottle down and marched away muttering, “Lucky girl.”
Jasper tossed a ten spot on the table and grabbed Bella’s hand, pulling her up with him while tucking a loose curl behind her ear. “Let’s get outta here, because Bella, I won’t lie…I love you too…” he trailed while running a hand through his hair in a rare show of nerves. “But there are things you don’t know—things you need to know, and they might change everything.”
With a lump in her throat and a racing heart, she nodded and followed him out, hoping all the while he wouldn’t break her any more than she already was.
