Chapter 13:
We decided that we didn't want to cut the timeline for Edward's change too close, so the rest of his first week back was filled with making love, spending time with the family, preparing as much as possible for our future, and planning for Edward's turning to take place the day before the week mark. Lydia had said it would be a good idea for him to be well into the change before the time was up, just to be safe.
The day of Edward's turning, Carlisle had informed us that the site in the forest near the house had been prepared, and there would be two of them near at all times, to make sure they both stayed safe. They would be staying at my house on the island for the day until the three of us had made love one last time, where Coop would feed Edward his blood, then start the change by draining him.
I was to call Carlisle as soon as Coop was done, they would come guide them to the prepared area, then cover them with the dirt that was removed. The guarding would start at that time, so everyone would be coming back to keep me from going crazy without my mates.
Our final love-making before Edward's change was truly intense and moving. After I gave both of them a parting kiss several hours later, I moved to dress. Coop held Edward on the bed, both lying face to face with their legs entwined. They shared an intense but loving kiss before Coop bit deeply into his wrist. Edward's mouth quickly replaced Coop's. I couldn't help but see the beauty in the bonding that was happening before me.
It was just as the sun was setting that Coop latched onto Edward's throat. Only a few minutes later, Edward's eyes slipped closed as Coop's wrist fell from his lips. I heard Coop hum in acknowledgment that the time was near as his eyes locked with mine, so I nodded as I pulled out my phone. Carlisle confirmed that everyone was close, and he and Jasper would be taking the first shift.
No sooner had Coop released Edward's throat and sealed the wounds, than I heard a knock on the bedroom door that led outside. I hurried to let Carlisle and Jasper in. Carlisle picked me up bridal-style as Jasper made sure that Coop was stable enough to carry Edward. We were soon dashing out the door toward the forest, with Coop cradling Edward to him protectively.
At first, after Coop had told me a final, “I love you, Isabella. Edward and I will rise together in three nights' time,” Carlisle helped Jasper cover them both with dirt, but I didn't want to leave them. A protective instinct was wanting me to stay very close to them.
After a few hours, both Carlisle and Jasper reminded me that the house was not far, and I needed to make sure I took care of myself for any little miracles that could be growing inside me.
I nodded reluctantly, but Jasper said assuredly, “I can feel them both, Sugar. They are resting peacefully, and Coop started Edward's change flawlessly. I can feel Edward's awareness shifting, so please don't worry. I'll call Em to come get you, so neither of us needs to leave their side.”
Em was extremely caring when he came to get me, carrying me directly back to the house to my room. The girls had changed the sheets, then turned down the bed, but I needed something to occupy my time. Once I told Em that, he carried me straight out to the girls.
First, we made ourselves useful by putting away all of the clothes and things that had arrived over the last two days for Edward, Coop, and me. Then we made a bunch of cookies and pies that both of my mates loved, since Coop warned us that both of them would crave sweet foods for the first several days after waking. The blood fridge in the bedroom got stocked, along with the ones in the library and off the kitchen. After that, I ate, but couldn't stay away from them any longer. Em smiled, “It's time for my protection shift with Rosie if you'd like us to take you out with us.”
Rose carried a lounge chair and blanket for me as Em ran with me. I let out a breath of relief as I saw Carlisle and Jasper chatting happily. They smiled at me when we stopped in front of them, then Carlisle hugged me to him, asking almost silently, “Are you well? Did you eat?”
I nodded and kissed his cheek, then asked, “Jazz, any change?”
He grinned, “Yeah, Sug. Edward's awareness has been gaining steadily, as has his strength. When they were both peaceful a while ago, I felt the mate bond flowing back and forth between them. Their bond is so strong and healthy, Bella. I can't wait to feel it once you bond with both of them.”
I chuckled at his almost breathless wonder, then said, “Well, you most likely won't have to wait long, since we were only postponing because of Edward's turning. Now, both of you go spend some time with your mates. Em or Rose will call when I'm ready to head back.”
Once Carlisle and Jasper both kissed my temple and left, I sat on the ground with my hand on the disturbed earth that now covered my mates. A hum of recognition and peace seemed to flow through me after a minute, a small smile making its way to my face as I whispered, “They're safe... they're doing well. I can feel it. It's hard to explain.”
Rose knelt down beside me, offering, “It's perfectly normal, Sweetie. I'm actually surprised you let Carlisle and Jasper talk you into leaving them at all earlier.”
I blushed slightly, knowing I wouldn't get out of telling them now, then said, “Well, we wanted to wait to tell you together once Edward's turning was complete, but by that look in your eyes, I can't not give you an explanation.”
Em chuckled, “Got that right. Now spill, Little Bit.”
He plopped down on the other side of me. After a breath, I said, “The three of us have decided to try for a baby. The couple of days when we first got back here? It was the perfect time to try, so this past week we've done everything possible to have the best chances in the future, if this time didn't take.”
Rose's face lit up with a beautiful smile, her eyes swimming with venom as she whispered, “Chubby cheeks, soft tummies, cute little fingers, and perfect tiny toes? Oh, Bella... I'm so happy for you. But how? I mean...”
I shook my head, “There are certain aspects that only Coop and Edward can tell you once they wake. Just suffice it to say that we are allowed, as long as certain conditions are met. Carlisle has all of Edward's swimmers frozen in his lab on Isle Esme, incase this time doesn't take. Carlisle sounded hopeful, though, since my fertility rate was extremely high. It's also the reason I've been drinking those shakes Esme keeps making all the time. Carlisle wants me to be as healthy as possible when I do get pregnant. They have a calorie booster in them, along with a folic acid boost.”
Rose thought for a minute, then asked, “So if it turns out that you aren't now, then you'll undergo in vitro? How soon can you start if you aren't now?”
I shook my head, “I think Carlisle might want to wait a month or two to let my body relax from all of the stress, but after that, we have to go by my cycle. Just don't give the others hell for not telling you, alright?”
Em asked softly, “What do you mean, Little Bit?”
I chuckled while shaking my head, “Well, of course, Carlisle knew the morning we decided. That's why Coop and I dragged him to his suite to talk. We wanted to make sure he had time to get all the necessary equipment for the lab. That naturally meant that Esme would know at the first chance that they had alone to talk. When Jazz came out to the beach and sat with me that one night, he let slip that Ali saw a certain decision of ours, and asked if it was true. Ali's vision was of us talking to Carlisle that one morning, so both Ali and Jazz knew. We were going to wait to make the official announcement once my men were both awake and fed well, though.”
Em chuckled, but Rose just shook her head with a smile. “It's fine, Bella. I guess that explains how Carlisle and Jazz got you to go back to the house so easily, though.”
I nodded, then Em said, “Yeah, with the chance that you might be carrying my niece or nephew, you need to be taking care of yourself and resting.”
I smiled, then said as my hand returned to the earth above my loves, “It's so hard to stay away, though. I feel extremely protective of them right now, plus I have the need to check on them all the time. I'm antsy when I'm not here… not able to know they're safe and thriving.”
Soon, Rose got a text from Alice, saying she was bringing me a snack. Rose asked me to get comfortable on the lounger she brought here. I did, wrapping the throw blanket around me. Ali smiled as she came through the trees holding up a picnic basket. “Your snack has arrived, via your favorite pixie sister.”
I chuckled and hugged her, then she said, “I had a vision of them waking. Everything is perfect, Bella. Edward's past the most critical stage now, so everything else will be smooth sailing.”
I smiled widely, then heard both Rose and Em whispering, “Thank God.”
Alice sat the picnic basket in front of me, so I asked, “What's on the menu?”
She smiled, then opened the basket for me as she said, “Since you only ate a couple of hours ago, Esme put in another shake for you, a few bottles of water, plus a mixture of cheeses, meats, crackers, and sliced fruits. Carlisle wants you to eat as much of it as possible, of course. He told me to remind you about your weight check after the guys are alert and fed.”
I nodded as I dug into the fruit, loving the taste of the fresh berries. Ali kissed my cheek before looking at Em and Rose, “Make sure she tries to rest. Coop told us she might not sleep well away from them, hence the padded lounger, but call one of us if she wants to go back to the house for a bit.”
I was able to finish almost all of my snack, then curled up on my lounger so I was facing the spot where my mates were resting. Though I tried to fight it, it wasn't long before my eyes were closing without my permission. I was soon drifting weightlessly as I listened to the soft sound of Em and Rose whispering.
I remember tossing and turning at different points in the night, but when I finally woke, it was to Carlisle curling a stray section of hair around my ear while whispering, “Good morning, My Darling. Are you ready to wake?”
I shook my head, but then rubbed my eyes before attempting to open them. When I did, I saw that the sun was just beginning to rise. Carlisle gave me a tender smile. I immediately looked around him to see that my mates were undisturbed. He cupped my cheek in response, saying, “They are well, My Daughter. They have not been left unattended for even a second during your rest.”
Jasper smiled from behind Carlisle, “They're both doing extremely well, Sugar, and the bond between them is even stronger than last night.”
I let out a relieved breath, then Carlisle helped me sit up. I stretched before he looked into my eyes while checking my pulse, then smiled while saying, “You look to be doing well too, even though you weren't exactly comfortable in the lounger last night.”
I shook my head, “It was because they're usually curled around me. I didn't sleep well because I couldn't feel them. I could sense them, but they weren't both wrapped around me like they have been since Edward came back to us.”
Jasper hugged me to him, then said, “Well, you'll probably feel better once you spend a few minutes making sure they're alright, then going back to the house to take a relaxing bath. How does that sound?”
I grinned at him, automatically moving to sit down by the earth covering my mates. My hands were placed on the dirt in front of me, my eyes falling closed to feel our connection. I instantly felt the recognition and peace, but it was tangled with love and reassurance this time. I let myself soak it in as I relaxed, knowing my mates were fine, but it was several minutes before my eyes reopened.
Jasper smiled down at me, “Your connection with them is strong, Sugar. That's a very good thing. Now, when you're ready, Esme will take you back to the house, so you can eat and relax in a warm bath.”
I hugged Jasper and Carlisle, then smiled at Esme before she picked me up bridal style.
That day and night, along with the next day, went fairly the same way. I would visit Coop and Edward's resting place to check on them every few hours during the day, then spend the night in the lounger. When the final night came, I was anxious and frustrated, because I knew I couldn't be out there. I was a human, and they were two vampires who would direly need to feed before they could be near me.
I paced and fretted, knowing they could rise safely anytime before sunrise, but not being able to contain my worry that something would go wrong. I hated not being able to check on them, so none of the girls could get me calmed at all as the hours passed at a snail's pace.
Finally a few hours before dawn, I ventured into the library, hoping to find something to distract myself. I ended up holding a picture of the three of us to my chest -one of them curled around me on the beach at sunset- while staring out the window.
I only moved about an hour before sunrise, when the library was suddenly filled with the scent of my mates, my whole body instantaneously came alive with awareness of them. I turned quickly, my breath catching at the sight that met my eyes.
Before me, just inside the doorway, my mates were standing with an arm around each other, soft smiles on their lips. They both looked well fed, and had showered off the last few days of resting in the ground.
Edward was a sight to behold in his new form. His striking green eyes now held more depth and sparkle, plus they swirled the same way Coop's blue-gray eyes did. His physical form was much the same as it was when he was a virus-bitten vampire, but his muscles held more definition, plus he looked a little older than before. They both looked sexy as hell standing before me.
As soon as I got done taking both of them in, I couldn't handle the separation for a second longer. When I started moving forward, so did they. We met in the center of the room, them surrounding me in their embrace in the same second. I let out a shuddered breath as I nuzzled into Edward's chest. He whispered into my neck in comfort, “Shh, Love. We have you. It's all over now, Isabella.”
I nodded, taking in his scent. It was still uniquely Edward, but richer and more intoxicating now. A hum slipped from my lips as arousal snaked up my spine. Edward tilted my chin up, so I caught his crooked smirk before he said, “I would love nothing more than to make love to both of you until it's time to rest, but Carlisle wants to do our exams before they retire to your house.”
Carlisle was extremely happy with both of our exams, making my mates very happy when he proudly told them I had gained a healthy three pounds since starting the shakes. He cleared all three of us for extracurricular activities, seeing as Edward seemed to remember just the right amount of pressure and grip things needed, from when he was a virus-bitten vampire.
Carlisle was astounded by that, but Edward's explanation was, “I remember everything from before. It's still as clear in my mind as it was before the cliff. I also remember all of the time I spent in the other place, watching over Bella, Coop, and all of you. Surprisingly enough, my second time as a human is pretty sharp, too. There's none of the fuzziness that I have remembering my first time as a human.”
With that, Carlisle promised to talk more about Edward's experience after we had gotten time alone as a threesome, then our Cullen family departed to my house.
We decided that we didn't want to cut the timeline for Edward's change too close, so the rest of his first week back was filled with making love, spending time with the family, preparing as much as possible for our future, and planning for Edward's turning to take place the day before the week mark.
