Finding Truth Behind Legends

Chapter 55:
Time moves quickly. Sometimes it feels like in the blink of an eye, days have gone by. Before I know it, it’s been 2 months since the wedding and finding out I’m pregnant.
They’ve been a busy 2 months, but a lot of progress has been made. Will and his granddaughter Amelia have taken over the care of me and the little cub, as Taha has started referring to our child. Will uses tribal ways, and Amelia uses a mixture of both tribal and modern ways. I’ll be the first to admit that I like the convenience of being able to see my child on a sonogram, without the fuss of being pushed to do this or that because it’s ‘standard care’. With them by my side, I have no doubt my child will come into the world healthy and happy.
Dad has officially put his house in Forks on the market and retired from being the Forks Police Chief. He says over the last couple of months, he has no longer thought of Forks as home. With the news that he’s going to be a grandpa, he’s wanting to find a little 1 or 2-bedroom place around here, but he’s promised not to look until after we finally deal with the Italians.
Just today, interestingly enough, we found out that the little cub is gifted. Jake was trying to talk to me, but I was off in my own world and didn’t hear him. To get my attention, the ass decided to throw a couch cushion at my head. It wouldn’t have truly hurt me, but it didn’t even have the chance to hit me. Lily said that as she walked into the room, she watched the cushion hit a spot of air about 12 inches from the back of my head, then ricochet off, as if it had hit a brick wall. I immediately told Taha we needed to find out what was going on, so he and Greg have been testing out different scenarios to see if it continues.
Currently, I’m pulling weeds from the flower bed in front of the cabin porch. Out of nowhere, I hear a falcon cry, and my head whips around to see Jeremy being thrown backward. I gasp and stand, wanting to make sure he’s okay, only to see talons coming at me from directly above. I duck, but when nothing happens, I see those same talons scratching at thin air about 2 feet from my head.
I shake my head when Chayton relents, then pat my slightly thickening midsection. Taha asks right away as he reaches us, “Are you two alright? I had to see if it would hold when you truly didn’t know something was coming at you.”
I nod, so he rubs my stomach as I promise, “We’re fine. Our cub definitely seems to want to keep me safe. Working with the flyers on their stealth has done wonders; I didn’t even hear the falcons with how close they got to me. It’s a safe bet that with my mental shield and our cub’s physical one, I won’t be able to be touched. We should continue to check sporadically, of course, but we also need to check and see if our cub can protect others with me, like Dad or the imprints.”
Dad walks over and hugs me to his side, “Did I hear you talking about me?”
I chuckle, “Yep. Just a little bit. We were talking about seeing how far the little cub’s protection extends. Want to be our guinea pig? It means possibly being lifted by a flyer or hauled off by a gigantic cat.”
Dad gives me a cheesy grin, “I’m in. What do I do?”
Taha shakes his head, “Nothing. If you happen to see the shifter coming, don’t alert Bella. Just act normal. We need to see if the cub will extend coverage to you if you are near her.”
Unfortunately, it doesn’t cover Dad the first few times. He ends up flipped onto Malachi’s back, swung up into the air by Finn, and nuzzled on the cheek by Delphine. The last one actually makes him blush. On the fifth try, though, Dad ends up taking my hand a few seconds before I hear Delphine let out a snarl. Looking, I find her with her paw over her snout. She shakes her head for a second, so I ask, “You okay?”
With a dip of her head as she meets my eyes, she then lifts her paw toward Dad. She scratches at the air, then shakes her head no at me. I call out to Taha, who quickly comes over. When he’s kneeling next to me, I offer, “The only thing Dad did differently this time was hold my hand. If I’m right, the person has to be touching me for them to be inside the shield.”
Just then my phone rings. Seeing Avory’s name as the caller id, I answer with a smile. “Hey, what’s up? Are you guys still coming out tomorrow?”
I hear crying in the background, growling, and Avory’s panicked voice, “Bella? We have a problem. Nova and I came to check on Mom. Dad was here, drunk again, and harassing Mom. He hit her, then hit me when I tried to protect her. Nova went coyote… knocked him out to protect us.”
My eyes quickly become the size of saucers as I look at Taha. “Get Zander to phase in, now. He needs to help Avory calm Nova. Avory, as soon as you and Zander get Nova calmed, come here. Bring your mom and a few days’ worth of her clothes. She can’t stay at her place with him physically assaulting her. She also can’t stay at your place or Nova’s, as those are the first 2 places he’ll look when he goes to find her. And make her eat something sweet or drink a soda, to help stave off the shock of Nova going coyote in front of her. We’ll explain when she’s here and calm.”
Avory takes a shaky breath, then lets it out in a rush, “Okay. Calm my mate. Soda, candy bar, clothes, drive Mom to yours. I can do this. Bella?”
I cautiously answer, “Yes, Avory?”
He lets out another breath, then says a bit more steadily, “Thank you, Lovey. We’ll be there soon.”
The line goes dead, so I look at my phone before my eyes find Taha’s. He’s in wolf form next to me, so I ask, “You got Zander? Or are you calming Nova?”
He shakes his head, then nods it, letting me know that he phased in to calm Nova himself. I place a kiss on his muzzle, then turn to Dad, who says right away, “I’ll give up my room and sleep on the couch until we can get a more stable sleeping arrangement for Avory’s mom.”
I shake my head, “There is plenty of extra room in both lofts. I’ll have Jake and Leah move into one of the lofts, then bring the extra bed that was donated to us up from the basement. I’m sure they won’t mind the shift in their sleeping quarters to help one of our own.”
My eyes search the yard, then find Jake talking to Willow and Finn. With a whistle, they all look my way, so I call, “Jake, find Leah. I need you both.” He quickly dashes off toward the trees while calling out that he’ll be right back.
Less than 5 minutes later, Jake and Leah are both running up to me. I immediately say as I guide them into the house, “Avory’s mom needs our help. Her husband just hit both her and Avory, and Nova went coyote to protect them. Nova’s place and Avory’s are both too easy. Her husband won’t find her here.”
Leah scowls, “Want us to scare the hell out of him? I’m game.”
I laugh then say, “That’s not out of the question, but right now, I need to ask the both of you to pick a loft to move your bunks into. I’ll need to give her your room until we get this taken care of… one way or another.”
Leah nods, “Oh, absolutely. Do you want us to bring up the bed from downstairs? Give us 30 minutes, and we’ll have the room set to go.”
I let out a breath, saying, “Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it. And Leah? Once I find out the whole story, we might just revisit the whole ‘scaring the shit out of him” scenario. It’s really not a good idea to have the cops showing up here at random to take care of this legally… not with so many shifting at all hours of the day and night. Somehow, I don’t really think that would stop him, anyway, from the way Avory describes him.”
She gives me a serious nod, “You just let me know.”
Taha’s hand wraps around my hip as he kisses my forehead. I look up into his eyes as he offers, “Nova is calm… well, not really, but I was able to get him to shift back. Avory got his mom to pack a bag for a week. She has also called her workplace and requested emergency leave for a week. Her place is locked up. Her husband is still passed out, but currently located in his car with an open bottle of Jack… which he already had in the passenger seat.”
Taha gives me a disgusted look, which I mirror as I say, “We’ll get the whole picture once they arrive, then make a plan with Zander. Leah and Jake are currently handling the room switch.”
Taha brings me into his arms while kissing me lightly. When I automatically calm slightly, he offers, “Let’s get you a glass of tea. You look like you could use a few minutes of quiet before the coming chaos.”
A few minutes sounded good. After a quick check to see my Dad smiling while talking to Delphine, I walk hand-in-hand with Taha into the house.
