Chapter 29

Caius leaned down and sank his fangs into the side of his son's neck, desperately pumping in as much venom as he could. As soon as he loosed his bite, the Doctor shoved him out of the way while holding two paddles to his son's chest and side.

"Stay clear my King."

With that, the doctor delivered a shock of electricity to Jasper which jolted his body, shaking his head when it had no effect. Replacing the paddles, he jolted him again, growling in frustration at the flatline still showing on the trace.

Tossing the paddles back onto a cart, the Doctor hopped up on the bed.

Straddling Jasper's body, he began compressing his chest in a steady rhythm, the respirator still delivering air into his lungs.

Bella watched as the Doctor worked desperately to bring Jasper back. She was terrified. She had watched as Caius bit his son and knew that even if they did restart his heart, the turning could still go horribly wrong.

She was startled from her thoughts by a hand on her shoulder. Glancing over, her heart clenched painfully as she saw a face so similar to her love's.

"Peter." She nodded at him quickly and went back to watching the Doctor as he tried to save Jasper.

"Bella. What's happening? What's wrong with my brother?"

Her voice was quiet, monotone as she answered, not thinking to soften the blow at all.

"He died Pete. Caius bit him, and now they are working to bring him back."

Pete sucked in a shocked breath as his horrified gaze locked on his brother, the desperate Doctor still straddled over his body, delivering chest compressions.

The Doctor paused after a few moments and stared at the monitor, a relieved smile breaking across his features as the trace finally showed a healthy rhythm once again.

"He is back with us my King. Now all that remains is for him to make the change successfully and awake."

Bella sat with Jasper, holding his hand, her thoughts still in a shocked jumble as she watched the wound on his side slowly disappear.

She had collapsed with relief when the Doctor had brought him back, silent tears of joy and hope escaping her eyes as Dora gently rubbed her back.

"He will make it through this Bella. I know my son. He loves you and his will to live is very strong. He will awake and be fine."

Bella had hugged her future mother in law and they'd shared a smile of hope. "Thank you for that Dora."

Coming out of her remembrances, Bella began to speak to Jasper as she smoothed back a stray, stubborn curl from his eyes.

"Hi baby. I hope you can hear me Jas. I miss you and I can't wait to look in your eyes again." She smiled sadly.

"I don't suppose they'll stay the beautiful green that they were, but I bet you'll look hot with red."

She chuckled and choked on a sob as she laid her head on his arm. "Please fight Jas. Please come back to me. I need you."

She looked up when the door opened and Caius walked in with Esme and Garrett.

Esme gasped and hurried to Jasper's bed. "How did he get so bad so quickly?"

Caius took the seat next to Bella as he answered. "He'd been declining in health and strength since the bite Esme, he just refused to admit it or complain. My son abhors weakness and always has. He's always hated his human side because of that."

Esme nodded and leaned into Garrett's embrace who spoke as he held her close. "How long will the transition take? I wouldn't expect it to take as long as a typical human turning since he was half vampire to begin with."

Caius nodded. "That is our hope and his doctor's opinion also. Just how abbreviated the change will be remains to be seen but he seems to be doing well, with no adverse reactions."

They were all shocked as, what had been a slow, steady beep from the heart monitor, suddenly picked up speed just as Jasper's now vivid red eyes snapped open, an anguished growl coming from deep in his chest."

Caius grabbed Bella and handed her off to his wife. "Get her out of here now Dora!"

Bella struggled. "No! I have to stay! I need to see him!"

Caius shook his head as he urged them to the door. "No Bella. We don't know what he'll be like when he completes the transition. You must leave my dear."

She slumped in Dora's arms and they left the room.

Caius turned back toward his son, who was now growling as he writhed and clawed at the bed, his eyes clenched tightly in this final wave of pain.

He looked at Peter. "You all should leave. It's probably not wise to have a crowd here when he wakes fully. Send Felix and Demetri to post outside the door just in case."

Pete nodded, already ushering his mother and her mate to the door. "Yes sir. Be careful sir."

Caius smiled. "Worry not. He is my son, and not the first newborn I've dealt with." They were both startled by a loud roar and Caius opened the door. "Go, quickly!"

He closed the door and turned back just in time to see his son spring from the bed into an instant fighting crouch, an aggressive growl tearing from his chest as his blazing red eyes pinned him.

"Hello my son. Welcome back."

The burn. This awful hellishness that consumed his body was beyond description. It made him cognizant of every cell in his body as it licked and consumed everything with its caustic white-hot heat, seeping through flesh, bone, muscle and tendon.

He tried desperately to focus on something outside the pain but the thoughts and memories passing through his mind were consumed in the fire, lost as soon as they were in his fleeting grasp.

He glimpsed a young woman. A very beautiful woman with long, gently curling brunette hair and skin of cream and silk. He watched as he moved to cover her, and felt as she wrapped him with her silken smooth legs. Then it was gone, the memory lost forever to the relentless heat.

This happened again and again with each person that was dear to him. Desperately, he would try to hold fast to the memory, to relive it, all to no avail.

Soon enough, none of that mattered.

He growled and twisted and writhed as even the ability to think left him, feral instincts taking the place of rational thought as his heart raced to the finish.

Before he could comprehend the fact, it was over, his heart still and silent as he took in his first breath absent the pain that had gripped him so fiercely.

With the breath, his mind processed the scents of the room with lightning speed, some familiar, others less so; none associated with a threat. Still, his instincts would not allow incaution and he sprang from his pyre ready for anything; assessing everything.

"Hello my son. Welcome back."

There was a vague sense of familiarity that nagged at Jasper upon hearing the blond male's voice, not to mention his scent, but he couldn't place him with any recollections and so, instinctually, he categorized him as a potential threat as he growled out his first words as a full fledged vampire.

"Who are you?"
