Plagiarism Is A Dirty WordPosted by mommy4thomas2002 on June 15, 2014 in Blog Post

Plaigiarism is a dirty word, no doubt about it! I was recently reading through the Twilight/Vampire Diaries crossover section on Fanfiction.net and came across a story that was eerily similar to one of my own. The circumstances, the characters’ history, even some of the action and dialogue was very much like a story I have written.

I was beyond angry about it! I put my heart and soul into my stories, and I give a lot of thought to the plot, the development of the stories, the dialogue, and whatnot. To see that someone took my ideas and made it their own is very disconcerting. I realize that I do write fan fiction and that the fictional universes I write about were created by other people. However, anything original I add to it is mine. To see someone taking that from me just hurts. I feel violated! There’s no other way to describe it.

I know fan fiction stories can oftentimes share certain traits, but authors generally try to make a story their own. The dialogue is different, the scenes are different, and so on. To blatantly copy the plotline, dialogue or certain scenes from another story is stealing someone’s work. It is plagiarism.  No ands, ifs or butts about it!  In my opinion, it shows a lack of respect. A writer who has to plagiarize someone else not only disrespects the author they stole from, they disrespect themselves.  It also shows that they are dishonest, that they are incapable of  writing ideas that are their own. That is not the mark of a true writer.

I suppose part of me is flattered that someone liked my ideas and attempted to make it their own. If they had given me credit, or acknowledged that my story inspired them, I would be fine with the similarities I found in that story. The point is, they didn’t. They took my ideas and passed it off as their own.

I will not name the author, or the story.  I have contacted him/her privately and will handle it from there. While I may publicly write about it, I would like to try and handle this with as much grace as I can.

I would still be angry and stewing about it if I did not have the support of my fellow writers at the Kittyinaz group on Facebook.  Meridian has been especially kind,  her words of wisdom and support has really helped me deal with this issue. I just can’t thank her enough for it.  She has been plagiarized before and wrote about it on her blog.  It’s what gave me the idea to write my own post about it. Her thoughts about plagiarism  echo my own. Here is the link to her post: http://addicted2godric.wordpress.com/2014/04/29/and-on-a-serious-note-it-has-come-to-my-attention-that/

And on a serious note, it has come to my attention that…Posted on April 29, 2014 by meridiean

Sadly, it has come to my attention that there is a writer/are a few writers who feel that my specific ideas, the ones I use in my stories, are free for the pickin’, as it were.

They are not.

While I would never, ever call these people out in a public forum unless it became absolutely necessary, I will use said public forum to ask this person/these people to either credit me with the idea, terminology I invented, or plot point that I created, or to just stop lifting and using my ideas from my stories as their own.

I had hoped the first example or two were simply coincidence, but evidently they are not.  I also tend not to believe in coincidences.

Everyone knows that many larger plots are enormously inclusive and have been around for so long as to almost become their own canon, but… it is generally quite easy to tell when the writer of a story has created something based on their own ideas.  And, no matter how unintended the action – as I hope these incidents are, and no matter how large or small the theft, stealing that idea, terminology, or plot point is still theft, and it makes me sad that I even have to address this issue.

And, yes, I *am* being purposefully vague here because I would never want to hurt their feelings or cause them any distress – unless it becomes absolutely necessary, at which point I will raise hell.  At this point I am not out for blood or anything of that sort;  I just want them to either stop (preferably), or to have the grace to acknowledge that, simply put, *I* thought of it first!

To the very best of my knowledge I have never done anything along these lines to any writer because I have too much genuine respect for them.  But, if I ever did, then I would surely want that writer to let me know so that I could immediately correct that part of my story – hence this post.   Ideas belong to their creator, period.

Now, if this person/these people had become inspired by one of my stories or found that they really wanted to incorporate a certain section, and had come to me asking if it would be ok to use this part or that, I would have been flattered as all hell and would most likely have given them every approval and assistance they could have wanted.

Anyway, I am now going to consider this issue addressed, but I will be keeping my ever-watchful eyes open and aware.  I know exactly what all has been lifted and from which stories. Although I am a very easy-going person, I hold my creations dear to my heart and do not in any way appreciate others using my specific ideas as their own.

I feel…violated.

Plagiarism...A very bad thing!!!

I am reblogging a post from Kittyinaz as one of the authors I follow has been plagiarized. This is the second time that someone's work I enjoy reading has been copied, rewritten, and re-posted under another author...THIS IS A BLATANT DISREGARD TO THE AUTHOR'S CREATIVITY.It really raises my hackles that this is happening to some of the best and gifted writers out there.

Plagiarism is some heavy shit that just ain't right...here is the re-post of the blog:

My turn! Jun16by Wendy Brandibur
I didn’t do this yesterday, but it needs to be addressed…

Don’t mess with my friends.Simple right?  You won’t believe how many people don’t think of this as a simple idea to not do.  I can forgive and forget with the best when it comes to me.  Ask Meridian.  But when I stand up for something is when I see something happening to another.  When others attack my friends, when I see injustices happening, when people do wrong things to my friends.  I have no problem getting into someone’s face, and will say things.

That person who cuts in front of another in a line?  Yep, I am the one who said something.  My mom left a store one day when she thought I was going to get into a fight.  It is my weakness.  I just cannot forgive and forget.  Turn the other cheek and so forth. Who deserves to be picked on, to be put down and so forth?  It happened to me a lot, and it is not something anyone should veer go through.  When you talk or write or whatever you use to communicate with, think of who it might hurt.

Turns out another one of my friends got her story plagiarized.  What the heck? This is becoming a trend, you know that whole history repeating itself crap.  (See how I tied to another post I did?  Yep.  I do that shit.) I can give tons of kudos to the lady who did it to me, when I talked to her, she took the story down. Huge kudos for her admitting the mistake and owning to the mistake.  You guys don’t know what guts it takes to admit you are wrong, especially to the person who you did something wrong to.  It happens all the time, and people try to ignore it, or use excuses to try to justify themselves.  They try blaming others for their own shortcomings, and when you try to help them, they refuse the help.  It’s a downward spiral that normally doesn’t hurt the people you think, it is those innocent souls that get hurt.  And that shit aint cool.

Wrong is wrong.  I have done wrong, and it is why I forgive easier.  I have a temper.  Yeah, I know.  You are shocked.  I control it well.  Actually, let’s give credit.  I am slow to anger when it comes to myself, and I excuse people thinking I am overreacting even when the person takes a knife and stabs me in the back.  Yes.  True story.  Well not literally, but yeah.  Actually… yeah story for another time. Back to what I am saying.

I have been inspired reading stories. Or songs, movies, books and so forth.  We are all humans, and inspiration can hit in many ways. When I know about it, I give credit. Shoot, that song on top of each and every chapter?  That is my credit to who inspired me to write the chapter. The fandom I am writing in?  Another nod to the creators.  I don’t claim to own anything but my idea.  Royal Ember is one of the examples of a story that someone else agonized over, worked on and so forth that inspired a spark in my head and so is Blood on your Lips, Feral Blood.  Shoot, I know I was so inspired that I wrote to the author, and after promising her I was not stealing her story, I got permission.  And if you read it (What If), there is not much similarities.  I could only hope to write as well as her!!  But I gave credit.

In my story In The End, there is a similar situation, one that I never dreamed of being a idea from another author.  The author Mavrosal.  I use a panther.  I did not even think about it until I read something later and went looking.  Why did I choose a panther?  The green eyes.  The same as Olivia, my character.  I have LOVED panthers and Tigers since I was a little girls.  I love the cats, but those two are some of my favorite, along with cougars.

I picked the panther because I wanted the creature I saw them as. Majestic, loving, affectionate.  Loyal.  Their sleek coat to me was perfect for the whole story and being sneaky.  Nothing else.  I had the idea and then tried to figure out how to implement it.  I let my fingers do the typing thing, and she became Sookie’s guardian.  Never once did I think of the Dying Series.  Not.  One.  Thought.  So if I took the idea from her story, I am sorry.  My bad.  It was never meant to be.  It was a nod to a cat that I love.  If a tiger would have worked, yeah.  And no I didn’t know about the panthers in Hot Shot yet either.

There.  I admitted my mistake.  It was unintentional but because it was brought to my attention I gave credit.  Was that so hard?  No.

When you steal someone’s story, you are stealing their work, their tears, their time and their frustrations.  You take the from them the pain from banging their heads against immovable objects when the story is not quite going the way they want.  You take the smiles from their faces when someone comments on the story or favorites them.

And while the worst are the ones who actually steal it word for word, there is equally the ones who paraphrase your story.  The one you spent nights up late losing sleep to pound out an outline, to talk with someone about it.  The one you agonized about publishing.  The one you spent hours on the internet making sure what you are writing is right, finding those pics to inspire you, to get everything down pat.

All we want is that credit.  A quick line saying, hey, I read this amazing story and it inspired me to write this.  It takes away from your work, cause people are going to think, I read this already, or did they steal another’s idea?  And you lose readers.  Because it pisses a lot of readers who are actually writers off.  And if they though they read it already, and am looking for a new story they x out of it.

This has happened to my friends.  And to me, but like I said, the person was nice, owned up and removed the story.  I love my fans and the support I have from them, that this was awesome.  But sadly, the latest perpetrator doesn’t want to give credit.

Don’t mess with my friends.

They have a deadline in my head, and if I hear nothing resolving from it, I will start acting on the options I have.  The nice civil ones.  And go from there.

I have others who think they are hurting others, but the ones they are hurting are the true reason why we are angry at them.  Remember that whole I forgive you for attacking me but not for attacking my friends?  Yeah.  That.  Bad.  Very, very bad.  like poking the angry tiger, or hornet nest bad.  You don’t want to do that.  Not at an innocent soul.  It pisses me off.

The lesson here?  Give ducking credit where it is deserved.  And don’t attack my friends.

Now… go read your favorite author, smile and it will all be ok.  Leave them a review to let them know you acknowledge their sweat, sacrifice, the mental torturing we put ourselves through and all for writing something we hope will please you.

Wendy

Hello everyone,

I have just looking over comments and wanted you to know That I am in the process of doing some overhaul on my stories. As you know they have been up since 2012.I have experienced a few things that were causing me to have a bit of writers block.Since then I have added some stories that belong to my sister and my best friend, and I hope you enjoy them.

On another note I have redone the site and I hope the changes are to your liking.I decided I needed something new and here it is.I definitely like the fresher look and  it's god a nice calm color instead of standard black and a splash of color.

I will be posting a short story that is the back story, prequel if you will, for The Snow King so that should give you some idea as to where it came from. Not many will agree with my ideas but they are, after all, mine.

The first Feature story is up and it's nice little one-shot by BlackRavenOfPoe, it's a Bella?Caius pairing, and it has lemons;so if you're under 18 it's not for you.

until next time,
Bella
