Chapter 14
Running down the beach side by side, Bella and Paul were silent. Paul sensed something had happened, but was afraid to find out what it was. Bella was scared to ask Paul for the truth. Did she want things to change? She knew that she would never know love like what she had with Sam with another man, but she couldn’t deny what was in her heart. Had always been in her heart.
Paul slowed down beside her, eventually coming to a stop. “Okay, Kitten. What’s going on?”
Bella stopped beside him and put her hands on her knees to catch her breath. “Why don’t you tell me?”
Paul looked at her, really looked at her and what he saw stunned him. He thought it couldn’t happen again. When he broke the imprint with Emily he thought that was it. He never thought he’d get another one.
“Holy shit.”
Bella blinked, “Paul?”
Paul grabbed her hand, “We need to find Sam, Kitten.” He started pulling her in the direction of her house, but she wasn’t moving fast enough, so he picked her up. In no time flat, they reached her house and he set her on the porch.
“Paul, what the hell is going on?” Bella wanted to know as she grabbed his arm before he could run away.
Paul grabbed her cheeks in his hands and stared into her eyes again. “I promise I will explain, but I need to find Sam. Okay?”
Something in his eyes and voice had her backing down. “Okay,” she agreed quietly.
Paul quickly stripped and phased, allowing his thoughts to open up to his Alpha who was on patrol.
Whoa, really? -S
Yeah. I didn’t think it was possible. -P
How did Bella take it? -S
I haven’t told her. I promised you, Sam. -P
Alright. Embry will be on in a few and we can tell her. -S
Paul phased back and pulled on his clothes before heading back to Bella and Sam’s place. He was about to have one of the most potentially difficult conversations of his life. Bella was still waiting on the porch with her arms crossed, although she did have a bottle of water.
“About time. What the fuck is going on, Paul?” She stormed over to him, irritated that more secrets were being kept from her.
“I told you I would tell you when I found Sam. He’ll be here in a few minutes.” He tried to deflect.
Bella decided to bite the bullet and ask him for the truth. “Does this have something to do with you having feelings for me?”
Paul stared at her wanting so badly to answer her question. “Bella, please...”
She huffed and walked into the house. She needed to keep busy since he wasn’t answering her and she didn’t like it. Paul could hear her slamming things around in the kitchen and knew she was upset with him, but he had given his word. Sam deserved to be there, she was his imprint first.
Sam walked out of the woods and could hear the commotion in his house, but wasn’t sure what was happening because Paul was pacing along his front porch. “What’s going on?”
Paul looked up, “She’s mad at me because I won’t give her a straight answer.”
Chuckling, Sam patted Paul on the back. “You know she has a short bullshit meter, bro. Let’s go tell our girl what happened.”
The pair of them walked into the house and were greeted with the smell of breakfast. Bella was placing food on the table as they rounded the corner and they paused as she looked up at them.
“Good,” she placed her hands on her hips. “You’ve both known me long enough to know I hate having things kept from me. Sam, you’ve been with me long enough to know I would figure something out. Now, we are going to sit, have breakfast and talk about the fact that Paul imprinted on me like civilized adults. So sit.”
The three of them sat down and Sam immediately made Bella her plate, while Paul poured her some juice. Once she was set, they attacked the remainder. While they were stuffing their faces, Bella spoke.
“I called Sue and canceled my appointments for today. I only had a couple so it wasn’t a big deal. I also called Quilly and he will be here in about thirty minutes. So...” looking at Sam she smiled. “I know what happened, I can feel it. Are you okay?”
Sam reached over and took her hand, “Yeah, honey, I’m fine. My wolf is okay with it too.”
She squeezed his hand and turned to look at Paul expectantly. He took a deep breath and met her eyes. “Yes, I imprinted on you and it’s a soulmate imprint like Sam’s.”
She couldn’t help the smile that stretched across her face. She ducked her head and had to fight to stay in her seat. She felt a warm hand under her chin, lifting her face to stare into warm brown eyes.
“Kitten, I need to know how you feel about this.”
Bella looked over at Sam, almost as if waiting for his approval. He stood up, walked to her and leaned down to press his lips to hers. “Tell him, honey.” Sam moved away and began cleaning up their mess, giving them a semblance of privacy.
Turning, she looked at Paul and smiled softly before she began talking. “The night the three of you found me after Edward left is when I knew my life would never be the same. With Jared, I found a big brother. With you and Sam, my heart found love. Even before Sam imprinted on me, I think deep down I knew I loved him. I loved you, too,” she smiled. “Despite Emily, I loved you. Despite Sam's imprint, my love for him, all of it, I have loved you. You and Sam are my best friends and I can’t be without either of you.”
Paul stared at her in shock. Never in his wildest dreams had he expected this, for her to feel the way she does. He didn’t know how to react.
“Wolf Lahote, if after a speech like that, you don’t kiss your new imprint you will have me thinking you’re a fool.” Old Quil spoke from the doorway.
Paul didn’t need to be told twice. He stood and pulled Bella up with him, placing his hands on her cheeks. “Nayeli,” he whispered before pressing his lips to hers.
Bella felt the same sparking sensation she did when Sam kissed her, but they were still very different. Paul took charge of the kiss, deepening it and sweeping his tongue into her mouth, their tongues dancing together. Bella moaned and pressed her body closer to his.
Sam had to turn away, to gain control of his own body as the smell of her arousal filled the air around them. He knew how potent her scent could be and tried to will away his erection, especially with an Elder in their home.
Old Quil cleared his throat with a chuckle as he watched them break apart. He moved to the table and set down what he had brought. It was finally time to tell them about the one legend he, and the other Elders, had worked hard to keep hidden from the three of them.
Bella reached up and smoothed her thumb across Paul’s lower lip. “I love you, too,” she whispered with a contented smile.
“Come sit, young ones. I have much to explain.”
The three of them sat down, Bella snuggled into Sam’s side while holding onto Paul’s hand.
Old Quil cleared his throat and opened the withered scroll he’d brought with him. “Your imprint was written long before I was born. It is part of a prophecy, one I now believe will come to pass.”
“A prophecy?” Sam started, but quieted with a sharp look from the Elder.
“A woman not of the Quileute tribe, who is a healer on her own, will be imprinted upon by two wolves of the largest pack. One will have known an imprint before which was broken, but will find love again. One is the true Alpha and will always have the stronger bond. She will be strong of heart and care for all in the pack. When a pup is created and the leaves turn brown, one will fall by the hand of the twisted.”
Sam and Paul stared at the old man as he read from the scroll, Bella, however, was in tears. “So what you’re saying is when I find out I’m pregnant and fall comes, that I am gonna lose one of them?”
“Yes, Isabella. One of them will fall.” Old Quil looked at the distraught young woman before him. “You have to remember, my dear, this prophecy was written before modern medicine had become what it is today. If I have deciphered this correctly, which I believe I have, this will all happen before this year is out.”
“Christ,” Paul hissed. “Emily gets out of the mental hospital in six weeks. That’ll put us at Bella’s birthday in September. The leaves are usually brown and falling from the trees around here in late October.”
Bella stood up, “No! I’m not gonna lose one of them to that psychotic bitch. Sam and I are barely starting and I just got Paul. I can’t...” For the first time since the Cullens left her she felt weak and out of control. Without warning, her eyes rolled back in her head and her body fell toward the floor. Paul caught her before she could hit the ground.
The three men stared at the unconscious woman, unsure of what to do or how to make the future not happen.
