Chapter 2
Edward rushed toward Bella, who was immediately snatched up by Demetri, as Felix flashed across the room and grabbed the vampire by his neck.
“Edward, stop! You’re gonna get yourself killed,” Alice hissed.
Felix slammed Edward to the marble floor, cracking not only the tiled flooring, but Edward’s face as well. Bella decided to intervene, not because she wanted anything to do with Edward, but because she wanted her pound of flesh when the time came.
“Master Aro?”
“Yes, Bambina?” Aro was instantly at her side.
“The punishment for the Cullens,” she looked at him. “Can it wait until after my change?”
“Of course, Mia cara. We shall just put these two in the catacombs and summon the rest.”
“There is one other request I have. Jasper, the Major, let him go back to his coven.” Bella looked at the other two behind Aro. “He was honest with me when I asked questions, but also avoided getting close to me.”
“Bella!” Alice hissed. “Why are you doing this? We’re family.”
“We were family, Alice. Family doesn’t abandon one another and they don’t leave without so much as a farewell or a kiss my ass. You had a vision of my future, said you saw me as one of you. Was it a lie?”
“Bella,” Alice hissed and shook her head.
Aro streaked over to her, holding out his hand. Alice hesitated only a moment before placing her hand in his with a sigh. Once he was done, Aro growled and released Alice’s hand, tossing it away as if it were garbage.
“Is there no end to the manipulations of the two of you? This poor girl hasn’t been able to breathe without one or both of you having a say.” Aro turned to Bella. “I want to send you home, but instead of going alone, I believe I will send you with a guard. While I know these two will be here, I fear for your safety, Bambina. I wouldn’t put it past the remaining Cullens to try and harm you before you make it back.”
Bella nodded, “Whatever you think is best. I leave my future in your hands, Master Aro.”
“May I ask, Piccolo,” Marcus stared at the intriguing girl before them. “Why do you have so much blind trust in us?”
Bella looked at the three brothers and then down at the floor. “In the year since I have met the Cullens, I have known more pain and sorrow at their hands than my entire eighteen years. I’ve been lied to, controlled, bitten by a sadistic vampire and left for dead on the floor of a cold forest. These were beings who claimed to love me. Here, among what I have been led to believe was an evil coven, I have experienced none of the same. Granted, it has only been a few hours, but from what I have seen, you aren’t the devils you’ve been portrayed to me.”
Bella turned and stared at Edward and Alice as she said the next words. “Since they’ve been gone, I’ve barely slept, ate or interacted with my father. It’s like they left me a shell of my former self. Not only that, I’m also being hunted by the mate of the bastard who bit me. Her revenge game has almost killed me, twice.”
Hisses sounded from the brothers as well as Demetri and Jane. Aro looked over at the pair in surprise.
“Envoyez-moi, mes seigneurs. Je vais supprimer la menace.” Demetri hissed through clenched teeth. (Send me, my lords. I will remove the threat.)
Marcus looked up and smiled. “Je sais pourquoi tu veux y aller, Demetri. Cependant, nous enverrons Felix. Il la gardera en sécurité.” (I know why you want to go, Demetri. However, we will send Felix. He will keep her safe.)
Felix bowed his head in acknowledgement and looked at his temporary charge. He’d figured out why his brother wanted to be the one with her and looked at him, nodding to let him know he understood.
Aro clapped, “Very well. Alec, Jane, please take our guests to the catacombs. Felix, go make your necessary arrangements. Meet back here in ten minutes.”
Bella should have known Edward wouldn’t go quietly. “No, Bella! I won’t allow you to become one of us.”
“It’s not your decision, Edward, it never has been.” Bella looked at him and then cocked her head to the side, narrowing her eyes at him. “You never would have changed me, would you? Despite what Alice saw.”
“No, Mia cara,” Caius stepped off the dias and toward her. “The call of your blood is what kept him around. When it was spilled, he knew he needed to leave or kill you.”
Marcus joined his brother at her side. “I’m sure he did love you, Piccolo, but he loved your blood more.”
“Jane, dear,” Aro spoke as he stared at Isabella.
Alec and Jane removed the pair, while Demetri glared at Edward. Felix returned with a bag over his shoulder and turned to his superior.
“I have left my men in Santiago’s charge until I return.”
Demetri nodded, “Let’s hope he lives up to his new responsibilities.”
“I’ll take care of her, Dem. You have my word.” Felix turned as Jane and Alec returned. They all watched in surprise as Jane approached Bella.
“Most people are afraid of me, but you’ve shown no fear. Probably because my gift has no effect on you. Because of it, I don’t have many friends, if any.”
“Jane, I would be honored to have you as a friend.” Bella interrupted the little vampire. “Give me your phone.” Once Jane handed it over and her number was entered, Bella gave it back. “Feel free to call or text me anytime.”
“Thank you, Isabella.”
“My friends call me Bella.” Turning to the brothers, “I will see you in four months, Masters.”
“Bambina, you may call us by our names. Things are not so formal around here,” Aro insisted. “We will await your return.”
In a move which surprised them all, Caius pulled Bella into his arms for a hug and whispered, “Listen to Felix and stay safe.”
Nodding, Bella turned to Felix, but felt Demetri’s eyes on her. She was unsure why the vampire unnerved her, but she would ruminate on it while she was gone.
Approaching the brunette, he lifted his hand to her cheek. “Tha se do sýntoma, Agapité.” (I will see you soon, sweetheart.)
Looking at him she quirked her brow. “You know I’m gonna figure out what you’re saying to me, right?”
Demetri chuckled, “I have no doubt, Gatáki.”
Bella smiled and then turned to follow Felix out of the Citadel and back to Forks. While they were on the plane, she did look up Demetri’s words and was stunned.
“I’ll be damned,” Bella turned to look out the window at the passing clouds. His words, his expression, his touch and his treatment of her led her to only one conclusion. But if it were the right one, how could he let her leave?
Felix chuckled, “Figured it out, did you, little one?”
“Yes, but I’m not sure what to do with the information now that I have it.” Bella once again grew silent. “Everything I’ve known for the last year has turned out to be a lie. I’ll need to think about this.”
Nodding, Felix turned to stare out the window. He listened as the human girl’s heart rate slowed with her breathing as she fell into a much needed sleep. He figured the next four months were about to be very interesting.
