New Love, New Life

Chapter 3
Bella had been back home for a month and settled back into her routine. She felt more relaxed with her Volturi bodyguard, even if she was still on edge waiting for Victoria to strike.
She had called Sam, letting him know what happened while she was gone, who was with her now and what would be happening after she graduated. He had been understandably upset, but knew it was her choice. Jacob, however, was pissed and was refusing to speak to her. He had told her she was dead to him, not caring she had found her mate. All he cared about was that her mate was a vampire and not him. He still hadn’t gotten over the fact he hadn’t imprinted on her.
Jane called and told her the rest of the Cullens had been summoned, but as of yet had not shown up. She said they had until she herself returned to Volterra to respond or Demetri would be sent to retrieve them.
Speaking of the vampire, Bella hadn’t spoken to him since she’d left Volterra. Not that she even knew what she would say if she did hear from him. She couldn’t help but be curious about him, wondering what he was like. Jane hadn’t told her much, explaining she couldn’t say anything as he was her superior. All Bella knew about was that he’s a tracker, much like James, but more powerful. She thought about asking Felix about him, but wasn’t sure if he would tell her anything either.
She was on her computer, finishing up her English paper, when her Skype began ringing. She quickly accepted the call and Jane’s face appeared on her screen.
“Hey. What’s going on?”
Jane shrugged, “I was bored. I knew it wasn’t too late for a video call so I thought why not. How’s school?”
“Almost over, thank heavens. I can’t take much more of this. Remember that guy I was telling you about?”
“The one who keeps asking you out even though you’ve said no?”
Bella laughed and pictured Mike Newton meeting Jane, “That’s the one. He asked me out again. I’ve had two thoughts running through my head on how to rid myself of him.”
Jane laughed, “Do I even want to know?”
“One involves you and a little bit of pain. Can you center it on a certain part of his anatomy?” Bella giggled when her friend laughed. When Jane sobered up and looked back at her ready for more, she finished. “Or I’m thinking about using Felix to make him go away.”
A loud growl came through the speaker. Bella watched as Jane turned away from the screen for a minute, looking over her shoulder. Faster than she could blink, Jane was gone and Demetri was in her place.
“What are you up to, Gatáki?”
Bella shrugged, “Just thinking about using Jane or Felix to make unwanted suitors back off.”
“I know you looked up the words I said to you, Agapitós.” At her nod, he continued. “Then I’m sure you know you’re my mate.”
“Why did you let me leave if that’s the case?”
“Trust me, it was the last thing I wanted to do. I need you here with me. But as I am the head of the guard, I’m needed here. With the Cullens being summoned and their specific crime, I have to remain here and watch the idiots we already have.”
“I have to be honest with you ,I was manipulated and lied to by the last guy claiming to be my mate. Don’t fault me if I’m a little skeptical. What makes you any different?”
“You doubt me?”
“Right now, I doubt everyone.” Bella shrugged, meeting his gaze. “Everyone I have met in the last year wants something from me, Demetri. My blood being the most significant.”
“I guess I’ll have to prove to you that’s not what I want from you.” Demetri stared at her, knowing he would have his work cut out for him thanks to the Cullens, especially the mind-reader.
Bella really wanted to know why he hadn’t tried to contact her since she’d left. “Have you been avoiding me for the last month? If you’re my mate as you say, why haven’t you contacted me?”
“I was sent out on a mission shortly after you left and until I completed my job I couldn’t contact you. I only returned last night.”
“Oh.”
Demetri smirked at her. He knew how he was feeling, but didn’t think she was feeling the pull. They spoke about nonessential things, mostly what they had been up to since she’d left.
“Jane said the other Cullens haven’t shown up yet. What happens if they aren’t there before I return?”
“I’ll be sent to retrieve them.” Demetri was just as frustrated as the Masters that the coven had yet to arrive. Deciding to change the subject, “How’s school?”
She smiled, “I’ll be glad when it’s over.” She ducked her head in embarrassment, “I checked out when they left me and only recently joined the land of the living, so to speak.” She blushed when she looked back at him, “Unfortunately, now all the jackasses who were interested in me before Edward have crawled out from under their rocks again. All but one understands the meaning of the word no.”
Demetri couldn’t control the growl that came from his chest, causing Bella to laugh. “You laugh, Gatáki, but I find no humor in the situation. You’re my mate, Isabella, and as such, you belong to me.”
Bella’s spine straightened and fire flashed in her eyes. “I don’t belong to anyone, Demetri, and I don’t know you. Until I do—”
“Until you do, nothing, Agapitós. You’re mine, the sooner you realize that, the better things will be.”
“It would behoove you to remember I am still human, Demetri, with human thoughts. I don’t conform like vampire women do. You want me, you’ll need to earn my affections.”
“Understood, Gatáki.” He smiled at her backbone and knew things with her would never be dull.
“Good,” she smiled at him. “Unfortunately, I have to—”
Felix jumped through her window, interrupting what she was about to say. “Close your window and lock it, little one. Keep the curtains drawn. Do not leave this room.”
“Victoria?”
“Yes. Don’t move!” Felix jumped from her window and Bella watched him run away as she closed and locked her window, drawing her curtains.
“Agapiménos,” came from her computer. “Is everything alright?”
“I-I don’t know. I think Felix found her.”
“Isabella?” When she didn’t answer, he tried again. “Look at me, Gatáki.”
When she finally turned to look at him, her face was ashen and her pupils were wide with fear.
“Listen to me, Moró. Felix knows what he’s doing. If he didn’t, I wouldn’t have allowed him to go with you. Trust me, everything will be fine.” She only nodded and stared at him, not saying a word. “Why don’t you go lay down, I know it’s getting late and you have school.”
Bella nodded, “Will you tell Jane I’ll talk to her later, please.”
“Of course. Expect to hear from me as well, alright?”
Bella smiled softly at him, “Okay. Good night, Demetri.”
“Good night, Agápi mou.”
Closing her computer, Bella changed and got ready for bed. She tossed and turned until finally falling into a fitful sleep.

The wind rushed by him as he followed his prey. He made sure to stay downwind from her, but never lost sight of her. He watched as the wolves chased her, and, as he expected, herded her in his direction. She was right beside him, not knowing he was there, when he reached out and grabbed her by the neck.
“You’re in big trouble, Cagna malvagia.” Felix growled as she whimpered from his tight grip. “Start the pyre wolves. I’ll separate this one.”
“I don’t understand. Why are the Volturi here?” Victoria whimpered.
“Your victim is under the protection of the Volturi. You should have left her alone, now you will meet your end.” Felix cut off her protests by separating her head from her neck. Throwing the body away from him, the wolves pounced on it, ripping her to shreds.
Once her body was burning, Felix threw her head in and watched as the purple smoke drifted toward the sky. After the fire was out, he nodded to the wolves and made his way back to his charge. Once stationed in the tree outside her window, he called Demetri.
“Report.”
“She’s been burned.”
“You made sure there was nothing left?”
“Yes, Dem, she’s gone. Your girl is safe.” Felix hung up and settled into place to watch over Isabella for the night.
