New Love, New Life

Chapter 11
Carlisle stood staring out the window of his and Esme’s bedroom. His thoughts were plagued by memories of the family’s interactions with Bella. A vampire’s memory is never ending and he watched as every interaction the family had ever had with Bella flashed through his mind like a movie. Shaking his head, he couldn’t believe how foolish he had been.
“Carlisle?”
He turned, seeing his mate behind him. “Yes?”
“Are you alright?” Esme laid her hand on his arm.
“I need to speak with Edward and Alice.” He pressed a kiss to her lips and turned to the door. “I’m going to find Aro, I need some answers.”
“Answers to what?” Esme followed him out to the living area of their room. “Carlisle?”
Without turning around, “I need you to think back over everything for the last year. All of our, and Edward’s, interactions with Bella. I’ll talk to you when I get back.”
Carlisle stepped out of their room and closed the door behind him. He walked down the hallway and saw Felix in front of him. “Felix?”
Turning, the large vampire stared at the blonde. “How can I help you, Carlisle?”
“I need to speak with Aro. Could you please direct me where I might find him?”
Shrugging, Felix led Carlisle to the private offices of the Masters. Knocking on the large, ornate door he waited until he was signaled to come in. Pushing open the large door, he saw Aro sitting behind his desk.
“Yes, Felix?” Aro didn’t look up from the document he was working on.
“Carlisle Cullen to see you, Master.”
Looking up, Aro saw the other vampire lurking behind his guard. “Thank you, Felix.” The guard bowed and left the pair of them alone. “What can I do for you, Carlisle?”
“I would like to speak with Edward please, Aro. I have some questions that only he can answer.”
“Certainly, Carlisle. However, you must understand that you will be escorted down to the catacombs and your conversation won’t be private.” When Carlisle nodded, Aro pressed a button on his phone. “Demetri, I need you to come to my office.”
Five minutes later a knock sounded on the door and Demetri entered the office space. “You called for me, Master?”
“Yes. Take Carlisle down to the catacombs. He wishes to speak with his...children.”
Nodding, Demetri turned and led Carlisle to where the prisoners were being held. “You’ll understand, Carlisle, that I can’t leave you alone down here.”
“Of course.” Following where Demetri pointed to where Alice and Edward were being held. They were in separate cells, with bars no vampire could break.
“Carlisle, finally!” Edward stood, assuming his father was there to get him out of his prison. “I hope you’re here to tell this heathen I am not to be kept prisoner.”
“Shut up, Edward,” Alice hissed from the next cell.
“Alice, I need to ask you some questions.” Carlisle began, ignoring Edward for the time being.
“I already know what you’re going to ask, Carlisle.” Alice sighed as she turned to look at her pseudo father. “I’ve always known she wasn’t his. I just didn’t know who until I was bringing her here to save his life.”
Edward scoffed behind him as he saw the vision she had had before she brought Bella to Italy. “She’s mine!”
Carlisle spun around and looked at his son, his first companion. “Is she really, Edward? You don’t treat her like she’s your mate. You treat her like a possession, like someone you own rather than love. Do you or did you ever even love her?”
“Bella is mine. Mine to own, mine to possess. I will enjoy the ambrosia which runs through her veins, as I use her for my own pleasure. I won’t change her, I will drain her as I pound my cock into her virginal body.” Edward had his head thrown back and his eyes closed as his hand moved over his hard length. Just thinking about what he would do to Bella had him close to reaching his peak.
Carlisle was stunned by what he was seeing and hearing. The person behind those bars was a sick and depraved individual, certainly not the boy he thought he’d known. As he stared at him, Carlos and another guard had Demetri in a death grip as the demon in him fought to get out.
“There is no saving you, Edward. You disgust me.” Carlisle turned to leave the catacombs and saw the rage in the eyes of the elite guard behind him. “Demetri, you will get your time. For now, I suggest you go see your mate.”
Demetri flung the two guards holding him into the walls and ran toward where he knew Bella was. He knew he needed to calm his beast, but he needed to make sure she was safe first.

Bella sat in the library with Jane, reading through a novel she had found. Since she was still human, she wasn’t allowed to wander the castle without a guard or Demetri. It was Jane’s turn for Bella watch, especially since she would be spending the afternoon with the queens. At least that was the plan until Demetri burst into the room.
Bella snapped her head up and Jane crouched protectively in front of her as the library door flew off its hinges.
“Demetri?” Bella had never seen her mate looking so feral. Her heart began racing as fear and adrenaline coated her skin.
“Jane, take Isabella to her room and keep her there until I return. No one is to enter and she cannot leave.” His orders came out in a growl and then he turned to leave, his cloak swirling around him, leaving a stunned Bella staring after him.
Doing as she was ordered, Jane escorted Bella to her room and stationed herself outside the door. Before she shut it, Bella turned to her friend.
“I’m not sure what that was about, but for the second time since I was brought into this world a vampire has scared the shit out of me. Don’t let him inside this room if he isn’t calm, Janey, please.”
Jane looked at the human who had become her only friend. She could clearly see the fear on her face. “I promise, Bella. He won’t be allowed by me.”
Bella gave her friend a hug and then shut the door, locking it behind her.

Carlisle walked back into his room, seeing not only Esme, but Rosalie, Emmett and Jasper as well.
“Did you get to speak with him?”
Nodding his head wearily, “Yes, but the Edward I spoke with is not the same boy we used to know, Esme. He’s gone and in his place is a monster who wants to drain Bella as he rapes her.” His wife and other children gasped at his words. “He told me himself of what his plans for her are or were. Alice also told me she knew they weren’t mates, but she didn’t know who her mate was until their arrival in Volterra.”
Esme had her hands over her mouth in shock at her husband’s words. Jasper and Emmett weren’t surprised to learn that they weren’t mates, but his plans had shocked even them. Rosalie, however, was angry. Her eyes had gone flat black at Carlisle’s words and it was taking all she had to not go rip Edward apart herself.
“Is there no saving him then?”
“Didn’t you hear him, Esme?” Rosalie growled and stood from her chair. “He wants to rape and drain her; not love and turn her.”
“I heard him. Maybe—” Esme started.
“No!” Rosalie yelled. “He will not be saved.”
“He’s your brother, Rose.”
“No, he’s not. He’s a monster, Esme,” Rosalie looked at the woman who had been her mother. “Let me assure you, if you choose him, you will lose the rest of us.”
Esme gasped in shock and looked at the rest of her family. All of them were looking at her the same way Rosalie was, including Carlisle. “He’s my son.”
“Who am I? Who is Jasper? Are we not your sons?” Emmett asked.
Esme sank into the chair at her back, as the knowledge that she could lose her whole family if she chose one seeped in. Carlisle walked over and knelt before her.
“I think what Edward is suffering from is bloodlust fever. He tried to deny himself the lure of his singer and instead made her his mate. When he left her, he was like an addict who needed a fix. Bella is his fix, but he can’t have her. Esme, I’m sorry, Edward is lost to us.”
Carlisle watched as the truth set in and he gathered his mate in his arms as she began to sob.

Bella paced the living room of the suite she shared with Demetri. She was nervous about seeing him. He had no idea he had frightened her so badly and she wasn’t looking forward to the fallout. Knowing she needed backup, despite his orders, she called the only other person she knew who could calm and protect her.
Picking up the phone, “Padre, ho bisogno di te.” (Father, I need you.)
Caius, hearing the fear in his daughter’s voice, rushed out of his office and was soon standing in front of her door. “Bella called me, Jane. Let me in.”
“Master, Demetri said no—”
Caius interrupted her, “I am your king and therefore outrank Demetri. Now open the door.”
Jane complied with his order, pulled out the key to Bella’s door and opened it, closing it behind him. Caius saw his daughter, the pallor of her skin, the wide eyes and rapid breaths, and understood she was frightened.
“What happened?”
Bella turned and threw herself into his arms. “He scared me.”
Caius led Bella over to the couch and sat her down, “Explain.” He sat silently as she told him about Demetri’s appearance, order and the fact that he had scared her.
“I know he didn’t mean to scare me, but I don’t understand what happened to cause such rage.”
Nodding, Caius pulled his phone from his pocket and spoke so quickly Bella couldn’t catch what he said. Before she could take her next breath, there was a knock on her door, followed by Jane opening it and allowing Aro into the room.
Holding out his hand, Caius allowed his brother to read him, so he knew the situation.
“I apologize, Piccolo. Carlisle wanted to speak to Edward and I sent Demetri with him,” Aro smiled gently at his niece. “If he reacted that way, I can only surmise that something Edward said set him off.”
Bella nodded, “I guess that makes sense. I wonder what he could have said though?”
“I don’t know, Cara.” Caius pulled his daughter close. “We will find out. Are you hungry, Bambina?”
Bella shook her head, “Not really.”
“Rest, Mia Figlia. I’ll stay until Demetri returns and we will make sure you are safe.”
Knowing Caius would keep her safe, Bella lay her head in his lap as he ran his fingers through her hair. The soothing motion had her eyes drifting closed as she settled into sleep.
