Chapter 12
He roared as he ran out of the palace, not realizing through the haze of his anger how much he had terrified his mate. He ran through the forest, culling trees as he went, but nothing was soothing his beast. The mind-reader’s words were playing on a loop in his head and he couldn’t shut them out. He wanted to rip his body, limb from limb, torturing as he burned him slowly. Vengeance was all he could think about. He knew he couldn’t return to the Citadel while he was like this.
He ran, keeping to the forests when possible, avoiding the populace. When he stopped, he realized he was in Palermo. The sun had gone down by the time he stopped, so he took the time to stroll around the city, trying to erase the evil thoughts in his head.
He wandered down an alley and found a man dragging a young girl to a dark corner. He could hear her whimpering in fear and suddenly the girl was his mate and the man was Cullen. Without pause, he ripped the man from the girl, holding him against the wall by his neck.
“Run,” he growled at the wide-eyed female. Once she had fled, he turned to his prey, eyes black with rage. “Men like you make me sick. You think it’s okay to take what isn’t yours, to hurt those you shouldn’t. Today I am your judge, your juror and your executioner.”
Flashing his teeth, Demetri tore into the man’s neck, feeding deeply. When the heart stopped, he dropped him, not bothering to clean up his kill as he ran away into the night.

Bella woke to the sun shining brightly in her eyes. Sitting up, she noticed that the curtains were pulled back, although Demetri always closed them during the day. Looking around their suite, she could tell her mate hadn’t returned. Sighing, she got out of bed and set about getting ready for the day, even though she knew she was going to be trapped in her rooms until he returned.
Once she had pulled on her jeans and a t-shirt, she walked into the sitting area and found it to be empty. Walking to the door, she unlocked it and pulled it open, finding Jane still standing guard.
“Is there any word?”
Jane looked at her friend sadly, “No.”
“Could you please find Felix? I need to speak with him.”
Jane had barely put her phone away when the giant vampire appeared before them. He nodded his head at Jane and looked at Bella expectantly.
“I need you to find him, Felix.” Bella looked at her guard and friend. “I haven’t heard a word and while I know he can take care of himself, I’m worried.”
“I’ll find him, sorellina.” Felix turned down the corridor, pulling out his phone as he went. He stopped to see the masters before leaving the palace grounds, letting them know of Bella’s requests.
“Master Aro, I need the activation code for the tracker in Demetri’s phone. Isabella is concerned that she hasn’t heard from him. She’s asked me to find him and bring him home.”
“You know it won’t work if his phone is dead or off?” Aro crossed to his desk and retrieved the code, handing it to Felix.
“I know, Master, but I have to try.” Using the paper, Felix activated the tracker on Demetri’s phone and watched as it started blinking. “He’s on the move, but he’s coming from Palermo.”
Caius hissed a curse before looking at his brothers. “Even if he’s running, he still won’t be here until morning.”
Nodding, Marcus turned to Felix. “Take one of the faster cars and meet up with him. Get him back here. He must answer for his disappearance, not only to Bella, but also to us.”
Felix nodded and walked out of the office toward the garage. Once in the car, he sped down the highway toward where his friend was. He knew that Demetri was in trouble with the masters, but since he was the captain, he would get a little leeway, especially once Aro read him and discovered what happened. Bella was a different story. She had a backbone Demetri had barely glimpsed and Felix was going to make sure he was out of the line of fire.
As Felix sped to the otherside of the country, Bella sat out on her balcony, rubbing her chest and thinking about her mate. When he had ordered Jane to lock her in their suite, his behavior had frightened her, not something she had felt around vampires since James and Victoria. Now though, his silence and absence pissed her off. She wasn’t sure what she was going to say to him when he came back. She thought perhaps saying nothing would be the better idea. However, she couldn’t even guarantee how she would react once he was in front of her. She would just have to wait.

The sun was shining bright, without a cloud in the sky, forcing Demetri to take shelter in a small outcropping of trees. He climbed into one to further camouflage himself and waited. Pulling out his phone, he noticed the battery was almost gone, but he needed to send a message letting someone know where he was. Deciding Felix was the safer choice, he sent him a text.
I’m coming back, but the sun is too bright. Had to stop. -D
His response was quick, letting Demetri know that he was on his way to him and to try not to use his phone too much. That told Demetri they had activated his tracker, which he was sure was his mate’s doing. He couldn’t help wondering what she was thinking. She had to be pissed. The last thing he’d done was order her to be locked in their suite, he could only hope she’d been let out by now. He knew his guards would follow his orders to the letter, regardless of how long it’d been.
The sound of a car horn coming closer alerted him that Felix was near. He knew there was no hope for a cloud to wander into the path of the sun, so he hoped Felix pulled close enough for him to make a mad dash.
Felix steered the car as close to the trees as he could and laid on the horn. Luckily, there weren’t many people around, so they would have some cover. When he could, Felix watched Demetri drop from the trees and speed to the car, closing the door before anyone was aware.
“Thanks.” Demetri pulled the car charger out of the glovebox and plugged in his phone. “What have I missed?”
“Nothing much. You’ll need to report to the masters once we return. Caius was pissed.”
“Isabella?”
Felix looked at his friend, “She hasn’t left her room.”
“At all?”
“Dem, you ordered Jane to take her to her room and then ran. Until your orders change, Jane won’t relent.”
“So she’s been alone the whole time?”
“I didn’t say that,” Felix intentionally let his words hang in the air.
Demetri bit back the growl which tried to come out. He could only imagine the way his mate would greet him when he returned. Two days of separation had caused the ache in his chest to be nearly unbearable, he wondered how his mate was coping.
“Just get me home, Felix. I have reparations to make.”
He roared as he ran out of the palace, not realizing through the haze of his anger how much he had terrified his mate. He ran through the forest, culling trees as he went, but nothing was soothing his beast. The mind-reader’s words were playing on a loop in his head and he couldn’t shut them out.
